EASTERN PROVINCE

BUGESERA—Police in Nyamata have impounded over 100 Jerrycans of molasses in a bid to control the substance as reports surface that its use as a key ingredient in illegal alcohol grows.

The items were impounded from Juru sector. According to police, the move was a preventive measure to curb down on Kanyanga dealing.

Sources say residents buy the molasses from Kabuye sugarworks, apparently for using as appetizers for animal feeds, but are instead instilled in the potent spirit.

Police say they will not tire in the fight against drunkardness and drug abuse, which is a prevalent problem among the youth.
