NYABIHU - The 64 kilometre road from Musanze, town through Rubavu, district up to the Rwanda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo was Wednesday commissioned by Prime Minister Bernard Makuza.

The road was constructed by STRABAG, a German construction company at a cost over Rwf 5.4 billion.  

While commissioning the road, Makuza commended the European Union for their support which has enabled the government to develop such infrastructure in the country. 

The out going Head of European Union in Rwanda, David MacRae, said that high transport costs have been a major impediment for trade in the region and hoped the new road would improve trade links.

The new road fits guidelines for the regional highways within the East African Community. It has widened sidewalks and a paved area and is environmental friendly. 

Added to this new road was a 5.2 km stretch to Bralirwa brewery and the small port on Lake Kivu.

The Minister of Infrastructure, Eng Linda Bihire, urged the residents along the road to jealously safe guard the road by ensuring its regular maintenance and management.
