The Ministry of Education has drawn up plans to equip both primary and secondary teachers with English teaching skills in order to bridge the skills gap that exits in the sector.

In an Interview with The New Times, the State Minister in charge of Primary and Secondary education, Dr Harebamungu Mathias, said that the training will bring together all teachers from primary and secondary schools who sat for English examinations last time.

The programme has been set up in anticipation of the approaching 2009 academic year.

"The examination was organized to evaluate the teachers on their level of English so as to classify them in their respective groups for training depending on the results they got from the exam” he said.

Harebamungu revealed that the trainees will be classified in elementary, intermediate and low levels.

"This will enable them to improve and come up with concrete skills and techniques in teaching using English next year” he said.
