RUSIZI - A group of 36 women in Rusizi District whose husbands are truck drivers have committed to fight domestic violence in their respective residential and work-places.
The women made the resolution on Monday, during a four-day training workshop on gender based violence. The workshop was organised by an international NGO UNIFEM at Umucyo Restaurant in Kamebe sector.
The women, who are grouped under Rwanda Truckers’ Spouses Association (RTSA), pledged to work with other concerned institutions in curbing HIV/AIDS in the district.
Irene Aisha Mbabazi, the national president of RTSA, said that there is need for AIDS awareness campaigns among wives of long distance truck drivers because they stay long without meeting their husbands.
The participants were also briefed on various poverty eradication projects.
Earlier, while opening the workshop, the Mayor Fabien Sindayiheba, called upon participants to help rally residents behind development programmes.
He added that there is need for partners to embrace domestic discipline which he said would reduce domestic violence.
