Two of the five people who have been in police custody for their alleged role in a grenade attack that claimed five and injured 52 have confessed that they indeed planned and executed the attack.

Those who confessed to have hauled the grenade are Alex Buregeya and Jean Pierre Habiyambere.

They admitted to have thrown the grenade into a crowded market in Ruhango district in the Southern Province.

According to Police, the motive behind the Buregeya’s attack was to avenge for the death of his father by a man released from jail while Habiyambere sought kill his former boss whom he claimed did not pay him.

According to Police Spokesman, Supt. Eric Kayiranga, the two got to the market on a motorcycle.

Habiyambere’s target was a man identified as Alphonse Gatera who had employed him as his motorcyclist but later fired him without pay.

However the two suspects missed their respective targets and instead injured nearby people.

According to police, Habiyambere had acquired the grenade from a man only identified as Valance, a little known habitual thief who is suspected to have died recently.

"Habiyambere brought the grenade and Buregeya hauled it to the public in the market” said the police spokesman.

According to him, Buregeya served as a member of the Local Defence Force from 1995 to 1997 but was dismissed for indiscipline.
