Rwanda win second gold

Epiphanie Nyirabarame will be hoping to emulate her compatriots Disi and Mukasakindi, who won gold when she competes in the marathaon this morning.

Rwanda’s Claudette Mukasakindi won the 10000m her debut in Francophone Games to win the country’s second gold medal on Friday in Beirut, Lebanon.

Mukasakindi clocked 35:32:60 to beat Moroccan rivals Chaabi Bouchra and Lahrissi Maria who finished second and third respectively.

Her victory takes the country’s tally of gold medals won at the games to two. On Thursday, Disi ended his medal drought in style after securing gold in 10,000m.

Having won the 2005 edition in Niger, Disi was eager to shine and he didn’t disappoint as he sailed home in a time of 29 minutes, 38 second and 68 micro seconds.

Compatriot Godfrey Rutayisire, who was making his debut in the Games, finished in a decent fourth spot after clocking 29:46:19.

In the ladies category, Jeanne d’Arc Uwamahoro failed to qualify from the 800m heat stages after a sixth spot finish (2:21:92).

Meanwhile, two-time Olympian Epiphanie Nyirabarame and Felix Ntirenganya will compete in the 42.195km marathon race this morning at 7.am local time.

Nyirabarame collected a bronze medal in the women marathon four years ago.

In the 5000m, Disi resumes hunt for another medal in company with his compatriot Godfrey Rutayisire later in the evening at 17.00 hours.

Disi scooped bronze in 5000m in the last edition held in Niger.
