Rwandair, the country’s sole carrier, has suspended its Kigali-Gisenyi flights till further notice, the company’s Marketing and Corporate Communications manager has said.

Michael Otieno told The Business Times that the route was called off to allow refurbishment of the airstrip.

"The runway in Gisenyi wasn’t on standard thereby calling for modernisation even to make it an international airport.

The route to Gisenyi has been suspended for over two months now following the modification of the Airport’s runway.

"We are planning to resume the flights as long as the modification of the runway and the modernisation of the airport is done,” Otieno explained.

Also according to Otieno, the national carrier has plans of extending their wings and fly to Goma, DRC in the a few weeks time.

Of recent, in order to deliver better services and coping with growing competition within the region, the carrier has opened up a sales office in Nairobi and it has started cutting of fares to some of its destinations.

Efforts to reach the body responsible of airports in Rwanda (Civil Aviation Authority) to get the updates on how far the Gisenyi airport modification are progressing were futile by press time.
