KARONGI – The governor of the Western Province Célestin Kabahizi has asked district leaders to hastily speed up the construction of classrooms for the 9 year Basic Education programme.

The tough speaking governor challenged district heads to avoid reluctance and involve the general public in the construction programme.

"All the requirements are in place and no matter what you do. We need the classrooms to be ready by the end of November so that students can comfortably start school next January,” Kabahizi told Mayors at the provincial headquarters early this week.

The reminder  comes at a time when the 9 year Basic Education in this region faces a lot of setbacks, including efforts geared at fully adopting English as the official medium of instruction.

With less than two months to the deadline, a spot check by The New Times has revealed that a vast majority of the schools have not embarked on laying the foundation for the construction programme. However, local leaders are confident they will beat the deadline.

"We are making sure that we will do whatever it takes, for the classes to be ready on time before the next academic year starts,” Bernard Kayumba, the mayor of Karongi District said.
