HUYE – District officials on Tuesday unveiled a plan to name all streets in Huye town so as to put an end to the confusion arising out of town’s lack of named streets.

The project that was announced by the president of the district Advisory Council, Dr Charles Ndagije is expected to kick off at the end of this month.

Ndagije said that after naming the streets, the district will then embark on a programme to attribute numbers to houses in the town.

"Once streets and houses are well identified, visitors will no longer need to be guided to their destinations,” Dr Ndagije said.

He added: "It will be easy to guarantee security for residents. For instance, if residents are threatened and ask for help, it will be easier for security organs to find out where they are for the purposes of intervening in real time.”

Residents who talked to The New Times welcomed the initiative.

"It will help us in our transport business,” said Maurice Nkezabera, a motorcyclist in Huye town, "we used to identify areas in reference to popular locations but after this exercise we shall be referring to street names and house numbers.”

"Referring to streets by designating their names is a sign of modernity. I am sure people will embrace the move,” observed Emmanuel Ntivuguruzwa, a student at the National University of Rwanda.   

Officials in the district said that the plan to have the streets named was initiated by the Southern Province and that it is being implemented in all districts in the province.
