NGOMA - Mugesera Memorial site in Ngoma District will soon be relocated to another location in the district due to its sorry state.

Local authorities have fears that the memorial site might not survive the coming rainy season. 

The site has no concrete floor, and it is not roofed which leaves it vulnerable to heavy rains.

The Sector Executive Secretary, Arcade Muragijimana said he has asked the district to consider urgent relocation of the site.

"We have told all the concerned authorities that the issue is urgent… we should in the meantime put iron sheets to stop rain from destroying the site,” he said. 

The district Mayor, Francois Niyotwagira said he is aware that the site is in a sorry state and the district plans to relocate the remains to other sites.

"We are aware that the site is in an appalling state and we will soon re-locate the remains to other areas. In fact, all the sites in bad shape will be relocated. Only those well built will stay. Kibungo and Rukumberi will be the main sites,” he said.

And Mugesera is one of the places that had the worst killings during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, according to survivors.
