In recent weeks, there has been an upsurge of cases involving child trafficking in the region. In our neighbouring countries, cases of child sacrifice no longer make headlines in the national newspapers.
Reports of witchdoctors, getting arrested almost on daily basis with bodies of young children abducted for ritual practices are becoming almost ‘normal’.
Early this year, police in Uganda arrested a mother over child trafficking. Florence Nyamwize was accused of attempting to sell her six-month-old daughter. She was arrested before the ‘deal’ materialised.
The story of child trafficking by one Christine Uwayezu, 36, a resident of Gisozi which appeared in The New Times (September 25) has dismayed many parents.
What was particularily shocking was that Uwayezu was taking the five kids to Uganda, a country hit by several reports of child sacrifice, probably for that very reason.
I think it is important that police in the region institute a team to carry out a wide-ranging investigation into the matter.
