BURERA -  Twenty lawmakers from the Lower Chamber of Parliament at the weekend joined residents of Kagogo sector, Burera District to construct classrooms during the monthly community work- Umuganda.

The MPs participated in the construction of six classrooms meant to accommodate students enrolled under the 9-year Basic Education programme at Groupe Scolaire de Kagogo.

It is projected that the classrooms will accommodate over 1200 pupils in Kagogo alone, many of whom have been studying under trees.

According to the head teacher, of Groupe Scolaire de Kagogo, over 100 teachers made individual contributions towards the construction programme.

The money was used to pay the workers to kick-start the foundation phase, he said.

The initial construction work also attracted members of the security forces drawn from the surrounding areas.

Speaking to the media, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Polisi Denis, said that their participation in Umuganda provided the MPs with an opportunity to exchange views with residents on various issues, while at the same time supporting community activities.

Polisi said that the MPs have designed a programme of participating in Umuganda every end of the month, at district levels for the purposes of covering all the 30 districts of the country.    

After Umuganda, the MPs held discussions with residents urging them to adopt family planning and ensure hygiene in their homes.
