KIGALI - Transport Ministers of the countries that constitute the northern corridor are set to meet in the Kenyan coastal town of Mombasa to chart a way forward in the reduction of doing business along the route. The corridor covers Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Kenya.

Speaking to The New Times, Rwanda’s Minister for Infrastructure, Linda Bihire said: "The meeting involves ministers responsible for transport in the countries that the route covers and it is meant to devise ways of cutting the costs of doing business along the corridor.”

A study by the Private Sector Federation has indicated that 57 percent of the time is spent at roadblocks, border posts, weigh bridges and for personal reasons.

The study says there are seven weigh- bridges in Kenya and four in Uganda which implies that a sealed truck is weighed eleven times before it reaches the Rwandan border.

Minister Bihire also cited bribes along the route as an inconvenience.

The meeting to be held on 30th September will focus on how these bottlenecks can be reduced.
