The Parliament has set up an ad hoc committee to assess whether institutions of higher learning are providing quality education as required by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

NCHE is a government body set up to ensure that all institutions of higher education provide standard education in the country.

The committee of five is headed by Adolphe Bazatoha and has a two-month mandate. It was set up after the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education Science, Culture and Youth presented a damning report that unearthed several challenges in public and private universities.

It is expected to come up with an in-depth report with more details on issues that were highlighted in the previous report.

The previous report indicated that some institutions did not comply with the 2005 law that governs the organisation and functioning of higher education.

It also discovered that some universities were not complying with the government directive of making English a compulsory language of instruction in schools.

ISAE-Busogo had claimed it had no capacity to switch to English.

The universities visited then include the National University of Rwanda, Kigali Independent University, ISAIE/Busogo and INILAK.

Almost all the universities and other colleges do not have enough lecture rooms and some lecturers lack motivation. The MPs recommended that salary structures be revised.
