HUYE – Residents of Mukura sector in Huye District have welcomed the sector’s decision to ban a local brew Nyirantare, which they say has led to crime levels dropping in the community.

The local brew was banned by sector authorities after realizing the negative impact it had on its consumers. Jean Damascène Nshimiyimana, formerly a dealer of the brew said that it should be classified lethal.

"It was like a drug,” said Nshimiyimana, "people would engage in fist fights after consuming the drink. Such acts have reduced ever since it was banned.”

Betty Mukagatare, a passionate consumer of the drink said wives would attack their husbands after consuming the local brew. "It was the main cause of domestic violence in homes,” she said.

Jean Marie Vianney Ndabazi, the official in charge of social affairs in the sector noted that imposing a ban on the local brew was a security measure which has borne some positive outcomes.

"We used to register at least twenty cases of domestic violence every month before banning Nyirantare, it is now two months and no single case of domestic violence has been registered,” said Ndabazi.

The decision to ban the brew was reached in July this year.
