SMS Media has come out to do what no one else has done before by rewarding the best of player from the 2006/07 national football league season.

Working closely with local sports journalist and the national football ruling body, Ferwafa, SMS Media has already come up with the shortlist of five players from whom the best would be chosen on December 4 at a ceremony to be held at Serena Hotel Kigali.

According to their (SMS Media) arrangement, even the general public has the chance to vote for the player they think was outstanding from last season.

The five players short-listed include; Eric Serugaba (Etincelles), Haruna Niyonzima (Rayon Sports), Kabange Twite (APR), Labama Bokota (Rayon) and Jean Baptist Migiraneza ‘Migi’ (Kiyovu).

According to SMS Media manager Jeff Gasana, the company came up with the idea to show the public that SMS Media Rwanda supports sports and football in particular.

"We’re offering the public the chance to vote their favorite player of the year 2007.

"This award will be given annually to the male player who is thought to be the best football players in Rwanda,” he told the media on Friday.

Gasana noted that their mission in starting this event, is to promote football in Rwanda generally and adding value to the local based players.

The process of voting to the public started on Saturday and will run until December 3 and the successful player will walk away with Frw1.000.000 on top of a return air ticket Kigali-Nairobi as well as a weekend accommodation with one person of his choice in Serene Hotel Nairobi .

Other prizes include; a fully connected Dstv package with one-year subscription free subscription, a specially made trophy, free SMS for a year.

SMS Media Rwanda’s initiative is a big challenge to Ferwafa who have failed to honor their pledge to award the best players for last two years.
