The Northern Province handball giants, Gicumbi won this year’s beach handball tournament which was held at Palm Beach hotel in Gisenyi on Saturday.

Gicumbi who are also the national champions won the seniors’ category with maximum after seeing off rivals UNR 23-10, Stella 32-19 and Police 22-15 respectively.

Rwanda Police handball club took the second spot after collecting four points from a possible six with two victories including 20-10 against UNR and 20-12 over Stella.

Stella and the National University of Rwanda finished third and third respectively.

Gisenyi’s Stella A won the juniors’ category after collecting four points from their two games 20-17 against Rubavu and 20-13 over sister side Stella B.

The annual event, which is the last on the National Handball Federation calendar, attracted just a handful of spectators when compared to last year’s edition.

Among the nine league clubs that were expected to spice up the event, only four managed to participate in the one-day event.

Clubs that missed the event include; APR, KIST, Ecole Scolaire de Gafunzo, Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), St. Joseph Kabgayi, Apapeki-Cyuru and APEK.

Both School of Finance and Banking (SFB) and Rubavu won last year’s event in the seniors’ and juniors’ categories.
