New beauty queen Louise Mukazana, 23, was crowned Miss UNATEK 2009/2010, beating nine girls in a tight contest held at Ngoma district’s main hall, eastern province on Friday.

The first ever UNATEK Rector’s Excellence Award event, was a combination of glamour, elegance, grace and electrifying entertainment performances.

Mukazana showed charm and confidence on the catwalk and no wonder she was the eventual winner.

She walked away with several awards, including free education for one year, and Sulfo, one of the key sponsors, awarded her a one year supply of housecleaning utensils.

The 1st and 2nd runner-ups Winnie and Théodette  respectively, also walked away with housecleaning equipment from Sulfo. 

Mukazana was the crowd’s favourite as she carried herself around with confidence, an infectious natural smile and a glow in her eyes.

It was obviously Mukazana’s day as the crowd was sent into frenzy every time she came on stage.

The show started at about 6 p.m. The hosts, Misses from various Universities and higher learning institutions, including the School of Finance and Banking (SFB), Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), attended the event and they were all dressed smartly with their crowns on.

The evening’s five judges included; Jean Pierre Higiro, Salus’ famous presenter Jado Castar, UNATEK’s Leon Mugenzi and Rwanda Television’s news anchor, and Breakfast Show presenter Evelyn Umurerwa.

Talking to the press shortly after her crown, Mukazana said her reign, as the first Miss UNATEK will be challenging. She enumerated her plans including promoting girls education and helping the disadvantaged in society.

"I’ll use my status to boost the gender equality in all schools, sensitize the youth on job creation, and to be aware about the spread of HIV/AIDS,” Mukazana said.
