BBC - Reports that the first commercial flight of Airbus’ A380 super-jumbo will take place on 25 October, Singapore Airlines has said.Singapore, which will be the first airline to receive the giant twin-deck plane, said the jet will fly from its home airport to Sydney, Australia.The flight will mark the end of the A380’s long-delayed journey towards commercial operation.Hit by wiring faults, the A380 is two years late, which has hit the finances of Airbus and its parent firm EADS.Airbus is now continuing with cost-cutting plans that will remove 10,000 jobs.‘Aviation history’Singapore said last month that seats on the first flight of the A380 would be auctioned on online site eBay, with all the proceeds going to charity."Everyone at Singapore Airlines is keenly anticipating the delivery of this new plane... the first flight promises to be one of the most exciting occasions in aviation history,” said chief executive officer Chew Choon Seng.To date, 14 airlines have ordered or committed to buying a total of 173 A380s.Singapore has made 19 firm orders, and has an option for an additional six.The A380’s wings are designed and made in the UK before being shipped to Airbus’ headquarters at Toulouse in France for the plane’s final assembly.Ends
