KIGALI – Kigali City Council has set December, 31, 2009 as the deadline for the completion of the construction of over a hundred classrooms needed for the 9-Year Basic Education programme.

The council plans to construct 119 classrooms in Kigali City to cope with the increased enrolment of pupils.

It will also construct 597 toilets, which have been lacking, a cause for concern on the hygiene in most city schools.

Jean d’Arc Gakuba, KCC vice-Mayor in-charge of Social Affairs, revealed this yesterday while officially launching the construction programme in Nyarugenge district at Kabusunzu Nyakabanda sector.

Gakuba said the scheme which will benefit 42 schools in the city, will be complete by the end of the year.

She urged the residents, schools and local authorities to put in more efforts to ensure the success of the programme.

In order to ensure that school-going children get proper education, the Ministry of Education had embarked on the development of the sector through the provision of structures and scholastic materials.

The programme that kicked off this academic year obliges different primary schools across the country to have a secondary section of up to Senior Three.
