MUHANGA – The vice-president of the Association of Wives of Truck Drivers in Muhanga District (RTSA), has hailed members for taking a firm stand at  fighting HIV/AIDS and Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Leatitia Uwimbambazi, made the remarks while opening a five-day training workshop for association members, at Muhanga cultural center, on Tuesday.

The training was sponsored by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) with the aim of training participants on HIV/AIDS prevention, GBV, and formation of cooperatives.

According to Uwimbambazi, the women needed to be exposed to the dangers of AIDS since they spent some time without being in contact with their spouses.

Josiane Uwamahoro, one of the participants, said that the association has enabled the members to meet and discuss challenges of managing families while their husbands are away.

At the workshop, district officials urged the participants to come up with income generating activities, to supplement earnings from their spouses.

The officials also advised the women to transform their association into a cooperative in a bid to improve their welfare.

Association officials appealed for financial support in order to facilitate their activities.
