MUSANZE - A house-keeper died on Tuesday night after a house undergoing rennovation he was sleeping in collapsed.

Papius Ntibankeneye of Musanze town was crushed beyond recognition after the roof of the house caved in.
His body was taken to Ruhengeri Hospital, for a postmortem.

The house owner, Agnes Mukandekezi, said the repairs being undertaken for the front part of the house and the roof had been undertaken following an order from town authorities.

She explained that when the district approved the repair plans, she decided to work on the front elevation of the house, but admitted that the house was an old structure having been built in the 1950s.

"We were given only one month to renovate our houses, and I think this having been a very short time to undertake repair works one cannot rule out  technical errors being at the root cause of the collapse,’’ Mukandekezi said.

The District Executive Secretary, Amiel Ndahiro defended the recent call for residents to rehabilitating old structures. He added that whereas other houses were safely rehabilitated; the collapsed house could have had a technical fault.
