RWANDAN boxers Maurice Bikorimana and rookie Sibomana Niyitegeka suffered early exits at the on-going AIBA World Boxing Championships in Milan, Italy.
Niyitegeka, who contested in the feather weight category (57kg), lost out to Argentine’s Perrin Ignacio on Saturday.
Niyitegeka trailed in all three rounds; 2:3, 0:4 and 1:3 to eventually lose 3:10.
It was however a more devastating defeat for the experienced Bikorimana after a 10:0 clean thrashing from Korean Park Kwan, ranked 101 in the world.
The 20-year-old, who competed in the light weight category (64kg) could not even squeeze out a single point in the three-round match which was clearly dominated by his Korean opponent; 0:3, 0:5 and 0:2.
No Rwandan has ever gone past the preliminary round of AIBA’s premier event. This year, 554 boxers from a record-breaking 133 countries are participating in the championship.
