Three people have been found dead as a result of rapid floods in Rubavu following heavy rains that have been hitting the area for the last two days.
The dead have been identified as Nyiransabimana Lucie, 40; Mukasine, 17, and a 5-year old child. Mukasine’s body is not yet found, but suspected dead.
The residents of Cyuve sector face the tragedy immediately following heavy rains created mudslides along volcano sides.
The road from Musanze to Cyanika was temporally blocked as running water from the mountains covered the road.
Strategies have been proposed to find a way of trapping and controlling the running water from Virunga for agricultural use, but events like this show there is a lot or work yet to be done.
Running water has been destructive especially on agriculture and houses for residents in the area.
