The East African Community Students` Union (EACSU), is next week set to elect a new cabinet at its General Assembly, Steven Seka, the union’s president has said.

The body that brings together institutions of higher learning and universities in the region will elect its new leadership at its General Assembly slated for Nairobi, from September 10 to 12.   

However, elections of the union come almost a year late.
According to Seka, of INILAK, a local institution, the delay was due to the different programmes amongst universities in the region.

"It has been hard to organize the Assembly owing to different programmes run separately by the universities which made it hard for them to fit the event into their time,” Seka said.

He added that at next week’s assembly, 20 cabinet posts will be open for elections, while the outgoing council will present achievements made during its time in office.

"We have managed to set-up forces to curb corruption, organs to fight and prevent HIV/ Aids in the region, a cultural festival and sports competitions and amended the union’s constitution,” said Seka as he outlined some of the achievements during his tenure.

He also pointed out that more could have been registered but the council was faced with economic challenges.

"We failed to print magazines that were of much importance in inculcating the union with the spirit of regional cooperation,” he noted.

The EACSU General Assembly that will be attended by 50 representatives from each of the five East African countries was last held in 2007 in Kigali at the School of Finance and Banking (SFB).
