GICUMBI/RULINDO – Journalists drawn from private and public media houses in the region, on Thursday toured Gicumbi and Rulindo districts, to see first hand the agricultural and livestock farming projects which have been set up.

The tour is part of efforts to assess the government performance  in the last six years. 

The visit was organised by the Ministries of Agriculture and Information.

The journalists also visited Pembe Wheat factory, located in Byumba Sector.

The journalists who represented; The New Times, ORINFOR, Contact FM and Uganda’s The New Vision, were led by Rwanda Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) head of crop production unit, Fabian Ntirivamunda.

Speaking to the scribes, Ntirivamunda said: "A lot has been achieved in developing agriculture and livestock farming countrywide.”

The Gicumbi District vice-Mayor for Economic Affairs, Ildephonse Butera said the production of potatoes, creeping beans, wheat, milk and fruits has increased.

"This has been successful because of government’s cattle restocking campaign of One Cow per each family.

In addition, agricultural reforms have been conducted whereby each district specialises in the production of crops suitable to the area climate,” said Butera.

He cited Kaniga, Nyamiyaga, Rushaki and Miyove sectors as the leading producers in the district. 

Butera attributed high agricultural and livestock production in the district to adoption of modern farming practices, terracing, reduced soil erosion and land consolidation which he said has boosted  extensive farming activities.
