KAYONZA – The Director of Kayonza Vocational School, Shaban Ziwa, has reaffirmed their commitment to produce graduates who are capable of creating their own jobs.

Speaking during recent activities to mark the school’s nine year existence, Ziwa said graduates are encouraged to form or join associations in order to engage in income generating projects.

"It is within associations that they can for instance access bank loans and attract donors to start up business,” he said.

The school hopes to produce competitive graduates capable of fitting the demands of the East African Community and beyond, authorities added.

There are three courses offered; tourism, hotel management and catering and tailoring.

Parents say the school whose population has grown to over 181 students has helped to solve the problem of drop-outs. 

"We started the school here to save us from the ills of drop-outs. We do not have to keep students in areas they are not comfortable with, if one can’t continue with the formal education, then he or she can have an alternative,” a parent who gave his names only as Jean Damascene said.

The school has so far graduated nine groups the majority of who are girls. Most of those who have completed from the vocational school formed associations.

Hotel Umuganda in Kisenyi and Hotel Tokika in Kampala, were started by our graduates, the school authorities said. 
Interesting to note is that some of the teachers are former students of the school.
