The former Presidents of Botswana and Portugal yesterday condemned the evil motives that led to the outbreak of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, adding that such massacres should never happen again.

Presidents Festus Mogae and Jorge Sampaio of Botswana and Portugal respectively, made the remarks after their visit to the Gisozi Genocide Memorial site in Kigali.

Sampaio hailed Rwanda’s recovery process over the years emphasizing that every person in the world has a major role to play in peace building.

"We have learnt about the dramatic story of what happened here and I admire what has been done with regard to the healing process.

Nothing substitutes peace and dialogue and everyone has a part to play in it.

"It is also good to have such a museum that reminds us of these past events so that they never happen again,” he said.

Mogae questioned how such terrible killings could happen adding that all leaders should play their part to ensure that such crimes against humanity like those of 1994 never happen again.

The two former leaders are in the country to attend the on-going 59th Session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional meeting for Africa.

The WHO Director General, Dr. Margaret Chan also visited the site.
