FOUR athletes have been selected to represent Rwanda in the 2010 inaugural Youth Olympic Games set for August 14-26 in Singapore.
The quartet was selected from athletes, swimming and boxing sports disciplines after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allocated four wildcard slots to Rwanda Olympic Committee.
Last month IOC offered two slots for a boy and a girl in athletics, one slot for a boy in boxing and one slot for a girl in swimming.
Alphonsine Agahozo (swimming), Hakiza Matusi (boxing) and both Adeline Musabyeyezu and Yves Sikubwabo were named in athletics.
Agahozo, 13 booked a place on the team after winning the KCB sponsored competition in Huye over the weekend.
Matusi, 17 was picked by the boxing federation after he exhibited good performances in the East Military Games held mid this year in Kigali.
Both Musabyeyezu (17) and Sikubwabo also 17, who will participate 1500m and 800m had been selected to represent the country at this year’s World Youth Championship that was held in Italy but failed to make the trip due to a visa hitch.
Mixed-gender events and three-on-three basketball are among the games for the inaugural Summer Youth Olympics due in Singapore.
Some 3,594 athletes will compete in Singapore in 26 sports comprising 201 events. The number of sports in the programme is identical to the London 2012 programme.
