RWANDA’S leading professional golfer Emmanuel Ruterana was delighted with his overall performance despite failure to win the Uganda Open championship over the weekend.
Ruterana, 26 finished in eighth position with 295 while counterpart Jean Baptista Hakizimana was disqualified on the final day of the championship.
Ruterana yesterday said, "I am happy with the results because this championship was very challenging.
I had gone out of the top 10 on Saturday (Day 3) and I’m happy with the way I came back in contention on the last day.”
Kenya’s Richard Ainley won the event after carding an impressive 289 points in the four-day tournament which climaxed on Sunday at the Entebbe Golf Course.
In the amateurs, Rwanda’s Thomas Eberhart managed to finish in sixth overall position with 301. He is the only country’s representative, who finished inside the top ten.
It was a battle between homeboys Peter Ssendawula and Vincent ‘Araali’ Byamukama and in the end either had to give way. But Byamukama didn’t give way easily.
Clearly the better golfer of the two, Byamukama (handicap +2) in a display similar to that of last year choked at the 18th hole to hand Ssendawula the most coveted prize in local golf.
Leading by one stroke at tee of No.18, Byamukama got a little too clever as he sought to add the longest drive award to his repertoire of honours and paid the price.
Ssendawula won 289 total points while Byamukama came second with 290 respectively.
