The 59th Ferwafa congress bringing together local football clubs has passed a resolution to enforce the ‘six plus five’ rule in next season’s football league, which starts on October 17.

The congress, which met on Saturday at Laico Umubano hotel, had all members unanimously agreed that clubs should field six home grown players and a maximum of five foreigners in every league match.

When the rule was first introduced during Ferwafa last general assembly [last year], members failed to agree on it, other supported while some were against.

But after the weekend’s general assembly, all members were satisfied and passed it without much debate.

The ruling is being introduced as a way of restoring the national identity for local football, which has been besieged by foreign players.

The 6+5 rule in club football was passed by the World’s football body, Fifa in its meeting held in Sydney last year.

The rule was also intended to reduce the increasing gap between the big and small football clubs.

The Ferwafa congress also urged top flight clubs to emulate APR and SC Kiyovu which have formed football academies so as to enhance talent identification.
