NYAGATARE – The National Electoral Commission head in Nyagatare, Thomas Ruhanika, has reminded election volunteers that free and fair elections are the cornerstone for good governance and sustainable democracy.

He made these remarks on Wednesday, at the end of a training session, for election volunteers in Nyagatare District. They were trained on electoral laws and procedures ahead of the 2010 Presidential elections.

The trainees, drawn from two electoral sites of Gatunda and Nyagatare are expected to be part of NEC teams in the forth coming elections.

"Last year’s elections were free and fair; we attribute this to your voluntary work. We highly thank you for the great contribution you exhibited and request for a continuous partnership with you in our electoral endeavors,” said Ruhanika.

John Murekezi, one of the volunteers said the training is timely as it empowers them to handle the elections.

"The training is essential to us. It is adds on our previous experience as volunteers. We hope to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a good atmosphere,” he said.
