Rwanda is on course of achieving universal access to HIV treatment, prevention and care, UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé has announced ahead of his visit to the country.  
Sidibé who will hold high level meetings with senior government officials is expected in the country this Thursday.

He will discuss with senior government officials on current global and regional opportunities and challenges in tackling HIV and how they will influence the long-term AIDS response not only in Rwanda, but also across the African continent.

Sidibé will also conduct high-level advocacy for universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care, support and the Millennium Development Goals.

"With more than 70 percent of people in need of antiretrovirals receiving them, and 60 percent of pregnant women accessing services to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, Rwanda is on track to achieving universal access,” said Sidibé in a statement.

"I would like to congratulate the Government of Rwanda for its leadership and the progress it has made in strengthening the HIV response in recent years”.

According to UNAIDS 2003 figures, at least a quarter of a million people are estimated to be living with HIV in Rwanda.

"This visit will also provide an opportunity to address the United Nations’ support in Rwanda’s HIV response and learn from the Imbuto Foundation’s achievement and challenges,” reads a UNAIDS statement.
