The Senate on Friday approved Dr. Daphrose Gahakwa and Dr. Marc Bagabe Cyubahiro, to head the Institut des Sciences Agronomique du Rwanda (ISAR) and the Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS), respectively.

The two had recently been recommended by Cabinet to head the institutions.

"We have approved both of them because we see competence in them and government can profit from their expertise in the institutions they have been posted,” Senate President, Dr. Vincent Biruta, told The Sunday Times, yesterday.

The Senate president explained that the Chamber has the power to discard any candidate proposed by Cabinet.

"The Senate approves ministers, judges and even governors,” Biruta explained.

Recently, the Senate also approved foreign mission representatives for Rwanda.

"Every candidate is first screened by the commission in charge which cross-checks their Curriculum Vitae’s,” Dr. Biruta.

"There are some we put on hold and we ask the cabinet to cross check their reputations.”

According to Biruta, several candidates have been dropped after being appointed by the cabinet.
