NYAMASHEKE - A Gacaca court in Kagano sector, in Nyamasheke district, has sentenced 27 women to different jail terms, after finding them guilty of Genocide related crimes. 
The court that sat last week in Ninzi cell, found the women guilty of stoning to death Tutsi who had sought refuge at Kagano parish during the Genocide.  

The majority of the women were sentenced to 30 years imprisonment, while others were given 20 and 19 year jail terms.

"We have found you guilty of collecting stones and stoning to death several Tutsi who had sought refuge at Kagano parish during the genocide,” President of the Ninzi Gacaca court pronounced.

The women in their late 40s and early 50s are also accused of setting on fire houses owned by the Tutsi during the Genocide and looted house-hold property.

They were also accused of rallying other women in the area to participate in the killings.

Many residents and survivors who were in court, welcomed the verdict appealing to Gacaca judges to bring to book other Genocide suspects who have not been tried.

Immediately after the court session, the women were whisked away amidst tight security to Cyangugu Central Prison, where they are going to serve their respective sentences.
