Leaders met over children’s rights

Forty leaders of Rugerero, Rubavu district yesterday met with charity organizations to discuss the rights of children.

Among the issues that were raised, was the new law on violence on children.

The Executive Secretary of Rubavu district said the district has plans to embark on campaign aimed at creating awareness of children’s rights in the district.

KCC cracks down on prostitution

Officials of Kigali City Council yesterday carried out an operation in Muhima and Kicuciro to crackdown on lodges that are being used by sex workers.

During the operation, many lodges that have been cited to be promoting the vice were also found in poor conditions while under-age girls were also found in a lodge in Muhima sector, Nyarugenge district.

Alphonse Nizeyimana, a KCC senior official said that the operation was aimed at closing all the lodges that promote the business.   

IGCP to launch new website

International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) will launch its new improved website on August 25. 

The launching will be in line with the celebration of Year of the Gorilla, which the UN Convention on migratory species has designated 2009.

According to IGCP, the website will facilitate more people both within and outside the country to get more involved in conservation of the rare species.

Museums not affected by crunch

Despite the ongoing global recession, the number of tourists who have been visiting the National Museums was not affected, according to an official.

The director of the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda, Prof Celestin Kanimba said yesterday that the trend this year shows that the number of tourists to museums will supersede that of last year.

He added that the institute plans to put new exhibitions in the museums of Rwanda to attract more tourists.

Nyanza farmers meet

Farmers of Nyanza district yesterday held a meeting to discuss how farming can be developed in the district.

The meeting that brought together cassava and maize growers, came up with a plan to extend the farming from 2,000 hectares to 10,000 hectares.

RDB to meet over hotel classification 

In preparation of the hotel classification exercise in accordance with the East African Community standards, the Rwanda development Board –Tourism and conservation has organized a 4-day training for managers of accommodation establishments across the country.

The training which started on Tuesday will end tomorrow and it is aimed at assisting the managers to understand the requirements for the classification and grading exercise.
