MUHANGA – The Minister of Education, Dr. Charles Murigande has commended provincial leaders for their efforts to improve the standards of education in the area.

Dr Murigande, made the remarks while meeting provincial, district, and sector leaders at Muhanga cultural centre yesterday to evaluate the implementation of the nine-year-basic education programme.

"I am impressed by your efforts of having residents contributing  towards catering for the needs of building school facilities.

I would like to ask leaders to use all available methods to improve our standards of education,” he said.

He explained that there are budgetary constraints of building more classes to accommodate the growing number of pupils, but implored local leaders to involve parents in the construction process.

Murigande criticised teachers who gave the profession a bad name such as those who get  drunk while going to work. He  urged leaders to be proactive especially in mobilizing parents to send children to school.

Local leaders told the Minister that residents have started making bricks and laying ground for construction of additional classrooms despite constraints like provision of qualified manpower at community levels.

They also cited constrains over acquiring inputs such as  cement.

Governor Fidèle Ndayisaba, asked the leaders to encourage residents to own education programmes by offering their inputs into the processes such as planning.
