GICUMBI – Inyange primary school in Gicumbi District, on Tuesday, received 800 laptop computers as part of the government’s ongoing programme of one laptop per child.

The computers, donated by Microsoft corporation, were handed over by the Minister in charge of Primary and Secondary education, Mathias Hareramungu.

"The one lap top per child programme is the brainchild of President Paul Kagame. It is , aimed at promoting ICT knowledge in schools in order to steer economic development,” said Hareramungu.

He called upon parents to contribute towards the construction of more classroom blocks in the district which he said was a big challenge to the nine-year basic education programme.

 "Members of the district private sector should come forward to invest in the education sector, by constructing more primary and secondary schools,” Hareramungu appealed.

The Microsoft corporation representative, David Ochanda hailed government for the commitment to promote ICT among the young generation.

"ICT knowledge is the only way to widen our youth’s education level and prepare them to contribute to the country’s economic development,” Ochanda said, adding that more computers will be donated to other schools countrywide.
He disclosed that Microsoft corporation will assess the impact of the donated computers after six months.

According to the Ministry of education programme coordinator, Richard Nkurunziza, each of the donated computers is worth US $ 200. At least 8800 primary school pupils in the country have so far received the laptops.

The parents’ representative at the function Isidore Nizeyimana hailed government for promoting ICT knowledge in schools.
