THE Rwanda Amateur Boxing Association (Raba) has already embarked on a mission of fielding women boxers at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Raba’s move comes after the IOC’s decision to incorporate women boxing at the 2012 Games.
"The idea of having women participating in the Olympic Games is a good idea and we are set to start preparing our own for the Games’ qualifiers,” Raba’s Secretary General Eugene Ndashyikirwa said.
Ndashyikirwa reckons that the country already has a number of good quality boxers who have been training with different clubs so there won’t be much of a problem in selecting the cream for the qualifiers.
In London, women boxers will compete in three weights; flyweight (48-51kg), lightweight (56-60kg) and middleweight (69-75kg) with 12 boxers taking part at each weight.
The international boxing body, AIBA has also offered to help local federations in the development of women coaches, referees and judges ahead of the Games.
