RAOUL SHUNGU and Rayon Sport are just inseparable. Latest reports indicate that Shungu’s return to the club looks imminent following recent remarks from one of the club’s top officials.

The blues’ Secretary General Olivier Gakwaya has revealed that the club has advised Shungu to officially write to the club if at all he is interested in reassuming his head coaching role with the club.

"Shungu has apologized for his acts and now wants a quick return to the club. The club’s executive committee has advised him to make an official request,” Gakwaya said before adding, "The club has also agreed to clear his arrears.”

The former assistant coach of Amavubi Stars was sacked in May over "irreconcilable differences”.

On top of being blamed for the loss of Rwf 15million on foreign players, some of whom have deserted the club since, he was also accused of causing division in the dressing room.

He is said to have created a rift between his assistant Jean Baptista Kayiranga and the players. Rayon also blamed him for creating bad blood between the club and the local football governing body, Ferwafa.

However, withstanding Shungu’s misdeeds, he still ranks as Rayon’s most successful coach after guiding the club to four league titles (1997, 1998, 2002 and 2004) and one Cecafa Club Championship (1998).

After guiding the club to the 2004 league title, he moved to Seychelles for a short stint before reuniting with the club before the start of the 2008-09 season were Rayon finished third, behind APR and Atraco.

This year, the blues furthered their trophy drought to four years.

With very faint hopes of winning the league title, Rayon’s hopes of silverware greatly laid in the MTN Peace Cup.

However, it was not to be as the club suffered a humiliating 5-1 aggregate defeat in the two-legged semi-final against Cecafa club champions Atraco.

Rayon’s last trophy dates back in 2005 when they won the Amahoro Peace Cup.
