GASABO - Prosecution has decided to withdraw the case involving former Sen. Beatrice Mukabaranga, who was arrested and later released from jail for allegedly issuing bouncing cheques.

Mukabaranga resigned from her seat in the Senate several weeks ago to pave way for investigations into the allegations, she was later arrested and detained for about 10 days.

The Spokesman of the Prosecution Augustin Nkusi said that Mukabaranga was released after paying back all debts and an additional fine.

"Before she was released, she paid back all the dates totaling to Rwf 14.2 million and a fine of Rwf 100, 000,” Nkusi said.

He added that the former Senator was cleared and her case was buried since she did not have any outstanding debts.
Mukabaranga served as vice rector for academic affairs at the Kigali Institute of Education from 1999, until she was appointed to parliament.

In the Parliament, she was a member of the Forum for Rwandan Women Parliamentarians. Mukabaranga began her career as a lecturer of biology, working at Makerere University in Uganda and later at the University of Chad.

She also lectured at the University of Swaziland. In 1997, she served as Secretary General for the Ministry of Education.

She also chaired the Rwanda chapter of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), promoting girls’ education in the country, and has served for two terms as an executive committee member of FAWE’s regional body.

Mukabaranga holds a bachelor’s degree in botany and zoology, a diploma in education, and a master’s degree in botany from Makerere University.
