•Cecafa’s SG warns on age cheats

Rwanda’s youth team departs for Sudan this afternoon ahead of this year’s Cecafa/ Bashir U-17 Challenge Cup which kicks off on Wednesday.

The team leaves Kigali international airport at 13:45 local time aboard Kenya Airways, with a stop-over in Nairobi before connecting to Khartoum.

The junior wasps held their last training session yesterday at Amahoro stadium and morale appeared to be high in the camp.

Rwanda, under German coach Michael Weiss, starts their title campaign with a match against guest team Egypt on Wednesday in Group C at 8.30pm local time.

Rwanda will then face Eritrea in their subsequent match on August 21, before meeting defending champions Burundi two days later.

Participants in the competition include Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Rwanda, Somalia and Eritrea.

Meanwhile, Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye has sounded a warning to age cheats, saying they have put in place a mechanism for determining the players’ age.

"We are not going to entertain age cheating. We have devised a mechanism to detect age cheating and whoever will be caught shall be chased away and face unspecified disciplinary measures,” he warned.

Sudan President Omar al Bashir has sponsored the tournament to the tune of $700,000.

Winners of the two-week long tournament will pocket $15000 while the first and second runner-ups will bag $10000 and $5000 respectively.
