HUYE — Ten dons from the former faculty of education at the National University of Rwanda (NUR) have been transferred to the Kigali Institute of Education (KIE).

The transfer follows the end of the gradual phasing out of the faculty of education at the NUR on recommendation of the Ministry of Education on June 7, this year.

The names of the affected lectures were drawn by NUR Executive Committee that sat on July 15.

Those on the transfer list which was seen by The New Times include; the current university registrar Dr Aloys Ruzibiza and the embattled centre for instructional technology director Gerald Rwagasana.

"The decision was taken by Cabinet in 2005 that undergraduate education faculty should move to KIE.

They started here by phasing it out but it also brought its own challenges. We ended up with professors who had nothing to do because they didn’t have enough students,” said the Rector Prof. Silas Lwakabamba.

"We don’t want to have professors seated here doing nothing,” he said, adding, "the unit cost of education faculty now is exceedingly high because they have no students but we have to pay their salaries and maintain them.”

He explained that they have already sent a list of the transferred lecturers to the ministry and the transfers take immediate effect.

By press time, Dr James Vuningoma, the KIE vice rector in charge academics said none of the new staff had reported.

"We expect some of them to join us. Some will join teacher training schools of Kavumu and Rukara,” he said on phone.

Those on the transfer list include 4 PhD holders and others with Masters and Bachelors degrees.
