Since the migration to a volume based billing system, MTN Rwanda’s mobile Internet subscribers have increased from 3,000 to 30,000 representing a 90 percent increase.

This was revealed by the company’s Senior Marketing Executive, Yvonne Makolo.

According to Makolo, MTN  is targeting to have all MTN subscribers with phones that have the Internet system use their mobile internet services by end of this year.

MTN Rwanda is among the many other telecom companies owned by MTN Group based in South Africa.

However, according to the African Economic Outlook report released recently by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Kigali, Rwandatel was by the fall of 2008 the dominant Internet provider.

MTN Rwanda’s increase in Internet subscribers means the AEO percentages could have changed tremendously.

The AEO report had indicated that Rwandatel has 62 percent on its ADSL network compared to MTN’s 35 percent on the GPRS (32KBps) and Wimax networks (64 KBps, 256 KBps and 1 MBps).

Artel and ISPA, the other Internet service provider in Rwanda shared the remaining 3 percent according to the report.
