ARUSHA - The East African Community (EAC) will next week begin consultations on the proposed draft framework on good governance in the region.

The two-day meeting to take place in Bujumbura, Burundi, is geared at incorporating views and comments from parliamentary committees and civil society organizations. 

Among the highlights of the meeting, will be presentations on the status of the EAC integration process and activities to lay a foundation for a political federation including the development of a good governance protocol.

"Experts will present papers on the role of members of parliament and civil society organizations in promoting good governance,” an EAC press statement reads in part.

The meetings are a series of consultations with various stakeholders that began during the first conference on good governance and regional integration in Dar es Salaam early this year.

At the end of the consultations, a good governance framework will be presented to the EAC Heads of State for signing as an EAC protocol.

Rwanda was ranked number one in the East African Community in two categories of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Index on African Governance, which are safety and security and another category on participation and human rights.

The Ibrahim Index of African Governance is a new, comprehensive ranking of sub-Saharan African nations based on the quality of their governance.

The Index’s assessment focuses on five areas that include; safety and security, rule of law, transparency and corruption, participation and human rights, sustainable economic development and human development.
