HUYE - The National University of Rwanda (NUR) has suspended its director for the Centre for Instructional Technology (CIT) over alleged mismanagement of institution’s property and causing disharmony at the university.

Gerald Rwagasana was suspended on August 5 after an investigative team made up of university dons found him guilty of all the accusations levelled against him.

The University Rector, Professor Silas Lwakabamba confirmed the development but could not divulge any more details.

"Yes he has been suspended pending the decision to be reached by the  higher authorities.

We wrote to him in accordance with the law informing him of this decision. The University Board will decide his fate when it convenes soon,” he said.

Gerald Rwagasana, in an interview with The New Times acknowledged receipt of his suspension letter but stressed that it was illegal.

"I was illegally suspended, I am eagerly awaiting the decision of the University Board before I can comment on the accusations levelled against me,” said Rwagasana.

The latest case follows the dismissal of the dean of the Faculty of Medicine whose contract was terminated by the Ministry of Education early this year.

Professor Herbert Nsanze, the then Faculty dean was suspended by the university administration over what was termed as ‘serious insubordination’.

On reports that some Professors conduct lectures while drunk, the Rector said that the rules have been tightened.

"This is an academic institution which has a strict code of discipline, not every body can do whatever they want. There are laws governing the nation and laws governing the institution,” he said.

"You don’t come to teach while drunk especially in an academic institution such as ours.

If you do, we have to take action.  People are expecting that you shouldn’t be coming drunk to face students and unfortunately we hear it and when we hear it we take action,” he warned.
