The Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS) is set to launch ‘four systems standards’ before the end of this year to improve the quality and confidence of the local systems.

The four standards that are in the offing include the environment management system, food safety standards, standardization mark and the quality management system.

"RBS is committed to being an acknowledged regional leader in systems quality management and aims at providing a strong linkage to international standardization systems,” said Chantal Rukeba the RBS public relation officer.

According to the bureau, the systems standards will help formulate policies and procedures that will ensure proper management of various systems.

The environment standards will demand the procedures of environment protection, location of the industry, the impact assessment of waste products to the environment and any other form of pollution it may cause to the environment.

The food safety system will oblige hotels and restaurants to comply with the required standards and good hygienic practices.

"The systems will market Rwandan products and can also help in traceability of the lost products while in transit hence enhancing imports and exports,” explained Rukeba.

The ‘four systems standards’ will work along side the product quality mark which is already in place and ensures quality standards of the Rwandan products. It has attracted two products so far mitsig beer and nil mineral water.

RBS is charged with developing and implementing standards, establish proper test laboratories, control the quality of imports and exports as well as local traded products and services among others.

According to Rukeba, the RBS is also concerned with improving the quality of life among Rwandan people through the effective application of standards, quality assurance, metrology and testing.
