In an extraordinary collaborative efforts, Miss Kigali on August 6 joined the Rwandan Diaspora Global Network (RDGN), government officials, business executives and Rwandan students in Diaspora, at Kigali City Council’s (KCC) meeting room, in the ongoing "One Dollar Campaign”.
"One Dollar Campaign” is an initiative of Rwanda Diaspora Community championed through the Diaspora General Directorate (MINAFFET), aimed at mobilizing Rwandans of all walks of life, to contribute in increasing the welfare of the 1994 Tutsi Genocide orphans.
The event was attended by KCC’s Social Affairs Vice Mayor, Jeanne d’Arc Gakuba, Miss Kigali, the Secretary General of RDGN Dr. Ismael Buchanan, Rwandan students in Saudi Arabia, and members of "Abakoranamurava” Cooperative.
At the event, the Abakoranamurava Cooperative presented their contribution of over 2m Rwandan francs, approximately over ($4000) cash, whilst students Frw1000, 000.
Miss Kigali, Cynthia Akazuba thanked participants for the humanitarian act, and called upon all Rwandans to show the same spirit to support the Genocide orphans.
Flanked by Gakuba, she showed her appreciation to both Abakoranamurava Cooperative and the students for their great collaboration towards the "One Dollar Campaign”.
"These children are suffering. They neither have homes, nor anyone to turn to. It’s our responsibility as Rwandans to support them,” Gakuba said.
In her remarks, Gakuba said that, several measures to support the Genocide orphans had failed. But RDGN has powerful commitment, and campaign is successful.
At the same event, Dr. Ismael revealed that over Rfw900m (including cash and pledges), has been registered.
However, the total excludes the amount of money which was collected from the "All African Stars” campaign, and the cash fundraised by the Abakoranamurava” Cooperative and Rwandan students from Saudi Arabia.
"This is a promising move, we thank everyone’s support towards the One Dollar Campaign,” Dr. Ismael said, that "However, we’re still hindered, because a bigger percentage of the funds are still in pledges.
We, thus request people to fulfil their pledges so that we can start the construction process.”
Dr. Ismael added that the fund will be used to construct seven storey buildings, including homes and vocational centres to help the orphans gain skills and generate income.
