Mayors of different districts in Rwanda gathered at Parliament to take oaths (Imihigo) about what they would achieve during the next year.

Performance contracts are made every year in Rwanda where politicians pledge that they will deliver.

Pledging in itself is good because it makes mayors, ministers and other political figures more accountable to whatever happens in their respective areas.

However the problem arises when they promise and don’t deliver. Pledging heaven on Earth is one thing and delivering is another.

Even the recently sacked ministers had made these pledges and their pledges were very good on paper and in words.

Recently over four mayors resigned following accusations like misuse of office, mismanagement of state funds and corruption.

I am not saying that oaths are bad thing but it’s quite a setback when people pledge and do the total opposite.

Actions speak louder than words. Instead of promising what you won’t achieve, work hard and your works will be noticed.
