NYAGATARE—Police Wednesday in Nyagatare held a teacher and her former student from primary school over ‘examination malpractice’—cheating.

Juliet Mukagachinya, 53, a Kawangire primary school teacher allegedly was helped  by a former student Emmanuel Sengiyunva to take her exam at Nyagatare secondary school.

According to a district educational officer, Mukagachinya was caught by examiners after establishing that she put another person’s identifications on her exam answering sheet.

When pressed, she revealed that people were sitting for exams on others’ behalf.

"They exchanged identifications where Emmanuel Sengiyunva used Mukagachinya’s identifications on his answer sheet, a trick exposed by exam supervisors right away.”

Police were later alerted and the two were immediately arrested and are currently in custody at Nyagatare central police station.

When approached, chief inspector of police in Nyagatare, Damien Gasana, confirmed the arrest of the old lady whom he said had been teaching for years without an A-level certificate.
This has not been independently confirmed.

"According to our investigations it was established that the old lady has been struggling to acquire an A level certificate which drove her desperate to the extent of hiring a mercenary who is being  identified as Emmanuel Sengiyunva whom she taught in his primary days in Kawangire in Rukara sector,” Gasana revealed.

Silvestre Mutabaruka, the district director for education said the two suspects wanted to tarnish the image of Nyagatare district but "with luck” they were apprehended.
